Boulder Sessions

  • Outdoor Bouldering Algarve
  • Beginner-friendly and suitable for experienced climbers
  • Improve movement, balance and climbing technique
  • Scenic coastal boulders around Praia da Luz and Furnas
  • Social sunset sessions in small groups

Bouldering strips climbing back to its essentials. Without ropes or harnesses, you'll focus entirely on movement, technique and solving short but challenging sequences. Protected by crash pads and guided by experienced instructors, it's one of the most enjoyable ways to improve your climbing while exploring the Algarve's beautiful coastline.

Outdoor bouldering is climbing in its purest form. Without ropes or harnesses, you'll solve short climbing problems on natural rock while improving movement, balance, footwork, and climbing technique. Protected by crash pads and guided by experienced instructors, bouldering is one of the safest and most effective ways to develop climbing skills.  The Algarve is home to a growing selection of beautiful coastal bouldering areas. Around Praia da Luz, Furnas, and several hidden local sectors, you'll discover high-quality sandstone and limestone boulders overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on the season and conditions, we choose the location that offers the best climbing experience for your level.

Our sessions are suitable for both complete beginners and intermediate climbers. First-time outdoor climbers learn movement fundamentals, spotting techniques, and how to climb safely on natural rock, while intermediate boulderers can challenge themselves on harder problems and refine their technique with personal coaching.

Unlike indoor climbing, outdoor bouldering requires you to read natural rock, adapt your body position, and solve every problem individually. Every route is different, making each session both physically and mentally rewarding.

Small group sizes allow our instructors to provide individual feedback throughout the session, helping you improve efficiently while enjoying one of the Algarve's most scenic outdoor activities. Whether you're looking for your first outdoor climbing experience, a fun afternoon with friends, or a new challenge during your surf holiday, outdoor bouldering is a fantastic way to experience the Algarve beyond its beaches.

Your bouldering adventure begins with a Meet & Greet at our meeting point in Praia da Luz. After a short introduction, your instructor helps everyone select the appropriate climbing shoes and explains the plan for the session.

Once the equipment has been fitted, we drive together to one of our carefully selected bouldering areas. The exact location is chosen according to the weather, rock conditions, and the climbing level of the group. Depending on the conditions, we may visit beautiful coastal sectors around Praia da Luz, Furnas, or other local bouldering areas.

After a short approach to the boulders, your instructor introduces the area, explains spotting techniques, crash pad placement, and basic outdoor climbing ethics before beginning with an easy warm-up.

The session starts with beginner-friendly problems that allow everyone to become familiar with the rock. As confidence grows, your instructor gradually introduces more challenging climbs while providing continuous coaching on movement, body positioning, footwork, balance, and problem-solving.

Throughout the session, there is plenty of time to rest, watch other climbers, exchange beta, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that makes outdoor bouldering so social. Our small groups create an enjoyable environment where everyone can progress at their own pace while encouraging each other.

After approximately 2-3 hours of rocktime, we return to the vehicle and drive back to Praia da Luz—usually with tired fingers, improved technique, and a new appreciation for climbing on natural rock.

Our bouldering sessions last approximately 3–4 hours in total, depending on the season, weather conditions, and the pace of the group. This provides plenty of time to warm up, climb a wide variety of problems, receive individual coaching, and enjoy the spectacular coastal scenery.

We provide all technical equipment required for the session, including climbing shoes from Ocun and Black Diamond, crash pads, and chalk. Our instructors also carry additional safety equipment and first aid supplies to ensure a safe and well-organised climbing experience.

If you already own climbing shoes, you're welcome to bring them. Using familiar equipment can often improve comfort and confidence on the rock.

We recommend bringing comfortable clothing that allows unrestricted movement, drinking water, sunscreen, and trainers for the short walk to the bouldering areas. During cooler months, a light jacket is also recommended.

No previous outdoor climbing experience is required. Beginners receive a complete introduction to movement, spotting, and outdoor bouldering techniques before starting their first climbs.

Transport to the climbing area is included in every bouldering session.

We meet in Praia da Luz, where your instructor welcomes the group before driving to the day's climbing location. Depending on weather conditions, temperatures, and the climbing level of the participants, we carefully select the most suitable bouldering area for the session.

One of the advantages of climbing with a local guide is the flexibility to choose the best conditions each day. Rather than climbing at the same location every time, we can visit different sectors to ensure the highest climbing quality while avoiding crowded areas whenever possible.

The drive to the climbing areas is usually short, allowing you to maximise your time on the rock while discovering some of the Algarve's lesser-known natural landscapes.

If you have your own vehicle, please contact us before your session. In some cases, it may be possible to meet directly at the climbing area.

  • Indoor boulderer If you regularly climb indoors, outdoor bouldering offers a completely new challenge. Natural rock requires different movement, balance, and route-reading skills than artificial holds, making every problem unique. Our instructors help you transfer your indoor climbing technique to real rock while introducing outdoor ethics, spotting, and movement on natural sandstone and limestone. It's the perfect next step for gym climbers looking to experience outdoor bouldering in the Algarve.
  • Outdoor boulderer Already passionate about outdoor bouldering? Join us to discover some of the Algarve's hidden bouldering areas around Praia da Luz, Furnas, and other local sectors. Whether you're looking for classic lines, technical slabs, or powerful overhangs, our local knowledge helps you spend more time climbing and less time searching. We select the best location each day according to conditions and your climbing level.
  • Sport Climbers Many sport climbers use bouldering to improve strength, footwork, body positioning, and movement efficiency. Without ropes or long routes, you can focus entirely on solving powerful sequences that directly translate into better sport climbing performance. Whether you're preparing for your next climbing trip or simply want to develop new skills, bouldering is one of the most effective forms of climbing training.
  • Families with older children Outdoor bouldering is a fantastic activity for active families with older children and teenagers. Without the complexity of ropes and harnesses, everyone can focus on climbing together while learning movement, balance, and problem-solving in a safe environment. Our instructors adapt the session to the experience and confidence of the group, creating a fun outdoor adventure suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers.
  • First-time outdoor boulderers Never climbed outdoors before? No problem. Our sessions are specifically designed to introduce beginners to outdoor bouldering in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. You'll learn how to move efficiently on natural rock, use crash pads correctly, understand spotting techniques, and gain confidence on real stone. With small groups and personal coaching, outdoor bouldering becomes an accessible and rewarding experience for anyone wanting to discover climbing beyond the indoor gym.
Unforgettable experience for confident climbers

Deep Water Solo Algarve

  • One of Europe's most unique climbing experiences
  • Climb above the Atlantic Ocean without ropes
  • Designed for experienced climbers (6a+ outdoors)
  • Wetsuit, transport and local guide included

Deep Water Solo is climbing in its purest form. Instead of ropes, the Atlantic Ocean becomes your protection as you climb spectacular sea cliffs above crystal-clear water. Combining climbing, adventure and the ocean, it offers an unforgettable experience for confident climbers looking for something truly different.

Deep Water Solo (DWS) is one of the purest and most exhilarating forms of climbing. Equipped with nothing more than climbing shoes and a wetsuit, you'll climb directly above the Atlantic Ocean, using the sea as your natural protection instead of ropes, harnesses, or traditional climbing equipment.

It may sound crazy—and perhaps it is—but for experienced climbers, Deep Water Solo is an unforgettable combination of movement, commitment, and freedom. Every route demands precise footwork, controlled movement, and confidence, while the reward is unlike anything else in climbing: a refreshing jump into the crystal-clear waters below.

The limestone sea cliffs near Lagos are home to our carefully selected Deep Water Solo sector, offering steep walls, technical traverses, and deep-water landings. Unlike traditional climbing trips, there are no alternative climbing areas to choose from. The success of every Deep Water Solo session depends entirely on the Atlantic Ocean.

Before every trip, our Headguide carefully analyse swell height, swell direction, wind, tides, and sea conditions. Deep Water Solo is only possible when the ocean provides safe access and sufficient water depth below the routes. While general weather trends can be monitored further in advance, reliable swell forecasts are typically only accurate around 10–15 days before the activity. For this reason, we always confirm the final conditions as your booking date approaches.

Deep Water Solo is not suitable for beginners. Participants should confidently climb French Grade 6a (UIAA VII-) or harder and feel comfortable climbing above water without a rope. If your current climbing level is below 6a, we recommend joining one of our Sport Climbing or Outdoor Bouldering sessions first.

Deep Water Solo is an adventure sport that involves inherent risks. Before entering the climbing area, your guide provides a detailed safety briefing covering hazards, water entry techniques, route selection, and local conditions. While our guides do everything possible to maximise safety, every participant must understand that Deep Water Solo is undertaken at their own risk.

Your adventure begins with a Meet & Greet in Praia da Luz, where you'll meet your guide and discuss the plan for the day. Before leaving, we confirm that all participants meet the required climbing standard.

After receiving your climbing shoes and wetsuit, we drive to our Deep Water Solo sector near Lagos. Before entering the climbing area, your guide evaluates the current sea conditions and confirms that the ocean is suitable for climbing.

Unlike many other climbing activities, Deep Water Solo cannot simply be moved to another location. The session is entirely dependent on the Atlantic Ocean providing safe conditions. If the swell is too large or the sea becomes unsafe, we will postpone or cancel the activity rather than compromise safety.

Once the conditions have been confirmed, your guide introduces the climbing area, explains all relevant hazards, demonstrates safe water entries, and discusses climbing strategies before the first ascent begins.

Throughout the session, your guide provides coaching on movement, route selection, body positioning, and efficient climbing technique. Between climbs, you'll have time to swim, recover, and enjoy one of the Algarve's most spectacular coastal environments.

After approximately 2-2,5 hours of climbing time, we return to the vehicles and drive back to Praia da Luz—usually with tired forearms, a huge smile, and memories that will last a lifetime. The whole experience is about 4 hours.

Our Deep Water Solo experience includes approximately 2 hours of climbing time, with additional time for transport, equipment fitting, safety briefing, and the approach to the climbing area.

We provide all essential equipment required for the activity, including:

  • Climbing shoes
  • Wetsuit
  • Transport to the climbing area
  • Comprehensive safety briefing
  • Fully qualified local climbing guides

Participants should bring swimwear, a towel, drinking water, sunscreen, and suitable footwear (sneaker) for the approach.

Transport to our Deep Water Solo sector near Lagos is included in every booking. We will drive with our van and than hike to the DWS location.

We meet in Praia da Luz before driving to the climbing area. Unlike our sport climbing or bouldering activities, Deep Water Solo takes place at one carefully selected coastal sector that offers the water depth, cliff quality, and climbing lines required for the activity.

Because there is no alternative Deep Water Solo location, every trip depends entirely on suitable ocean conditions. Our guides continuously monitor swell forecasts, tides, wind, and sea state in the days leading up to your booking. Reliable swell predictions are generally only possible 10–15 days in advance, which is why final confirmation of the activity may be given shortly before your scheduled date.

If conditions are unsafe, we will always postpone or cancel the session. While this can be disappointing, it is essential to ensure that every Deep Water Solo experience takes place under the safest possible conditions.

  • Sport Climbers (6a and Above) Deep Water Solo is designed for experienced sport climbers who confidently climb French Grade 6a or harder. If you regularly lead climb and feel comfortable on steep limestone, DWS offers one of the most exciting climbing experiences available.
  • Experienced Boulderers Strong boulderers with solid movement skills and climbing fitness will feel right at home on the short, powerful sequences that characterise many Deep Water Solo routes. Good body tension, confidence on overhanging terrain, and precise footwork are key to enjoying the experience.
  • Climbers Looking for a New Challenge If you've spent years climbing indoors or outdoors and are looking for something completely different, Deep Water Solo offers a unique combination of climbing, adventure, and the freedom of moving above the Atlantic without ropes.
  • Adventure Travellers For climbers seeking more than a traditional day on the crag, Deep Water Solo combines climbing, swimming, cliff jumping, and exploring hidden sections of the Algarve coastline. It's an unforgettable experience for those who enjoy pushing their comfort zone in spectacular natural surroundings.

Confident Swimmers

Every participant should be comfortable swimming in open water and climbing above the sea. Previous Deep Water Solo experience is not required, but confidence in both climbing and swimming is essential for a safe and enjoyable day.

Faq Boulder & Deep Water Solo

Rock climbing is all about ascending longer routes using ropes and safety equipment. Bouldering focuses on shorter, more technical climbing problems without ropes, protected by crash pads. Deep Water Solo combines climbing and the ocean—climbers ascend sea cliffs above deep water without ropes, using the sea as their natural protection. Each discipline offers a completely different climbing experience and develops different skills.

If you're new to climbing, outdoor bouldering is an excellent introduction to movement on natural rock. Sport climbing is ideal if you're looking to learn rope techniques and climb longer routes. Deep Water Solo is designed for experienced climbers who are comfortable climbing at least grade 6a outdoors and want to experience one of the most exciting climbing disciplines in the world.

Bouldering is suitable for complete beginners and requires no previous climbing experience. Deep Water Solo is only recommended for experienced climbers who comfortably climb at least 6a outdoors and are confident swimming in open water.

Outdoor bouldering is climbing short rock formations without ropes or harnesses. Instead of focusing on height, climbers solve short, technical sequences called "problems." Crash pads protect the landing area, allowing climbers to concentrate entirely on movement, balance and technique while climbing on beautiful natural rock.

Natural rock offers a completely different experience from artificial climbing walls. Every hold, movement and sequence is unique, requiring creativity, balance and problem-solving. Outdoor bouldering helps improve footwork, body positioning and movement efficiency, making it one of the best ways to become a stronger climber overall. AND it's just fun.

Our sessions take place at carefully selected coastal bouldering areas around Praia da Luz and Praia das Furnas. These locations offer excellent rock quality, beautiful scenery and a wide variety of boulder problems for different ability levels.

No. Outdoor bouldering is suitable for beginners as well as experienced climbers. Our instructors adapt the session to the experience of the group.

Climbing shoes and transport are included. Crash pads and all group equipment are provided by your instructor, so you only need comfortable clothing, water and plenty of motivation.

If weather conditions make bouldering unsafe, we'll try to reschedule your session. If this isn't possible, you'll receive a full refund.

Deep Water Solo (DWS), also known as Psicobloc, is climbing above deep water without ropes or climbing protection. Instead of a rope, the sea becomes your landing area. Combining climbing, swimming and adventure, it is considered one of the purest and most exciting forms of climbing.

Deep Water Solo is an advanced climbing discipline and is only suitable for experienced climbers. Before climbing, our guides explain all safety procedures, entry techniques and local hazards. Ocean conditions are carefully assessed before every trip, and sessions only take place when conditions are considered suitable.

Unlike sport climbing, there is no opportunity to rest on the rope. Climbers need enough strength, endurance and confidence to move efficiently above the water. A comfortable outdoor climbing level of at least 6a ensures you can fully enjoy the experience while maintaining a good safety margin.

Yes. Swimming confidently is essential. Every participant climbs above the Atlantic Ocean wearing a wetsuit, and falling into the water is part of the experience.

Falling into the water is completely normal and part of Deep Water Solo. Before climbing, your guide explains how to enter the water safely, how to climb back onto the rocks and what to expect after a fall.

Yes. We provide a wetsuit, climbing shoes and transport to the climbing area.

Deep Water Solo depends heavily on ocean swell. Reliable swell forecasts are only available about 10–14 days in advance, so we can only confirm suitable conditions shortly before your trip. This ensures the best possible combination of safety and climbing quality.

Deep Water Solo offers a unique sense of freedom. Without ropes or bolts, every movement feels more natural and committing, while the Atlantic Ocean provides an unforgettable setting. For many climbers, it is one of the most rewarding climbing experiences they will ever have.

Unlike traditional rock climbing, Deep Water Solo is completely dependent on ocean conditions. Swell height, wave direction and tide determine whether the water below the cliffs is deep and calm enough for safe climbing. Even on a sunny day, unsuitable swell can make the location unsafe. That's why every Deep Water Solo session is planned around the latest marine forecast, ensuring the best possible combination of safety, climbing quality and enjoyment.
